What’s it Like Entering the Awards?
In the months before the 2023 Local History Awards opened for entries we asked a few of the winners from the Awards in 2021 to join us and share their experiences at an event in the Library.
Carole's Experience:
Carole Rutter entered the Personal Memoirs category of the 2021 Local History Awards, with a humorous retelling of a childhood birthday present. Her entry was called "Dolls in Dark Dunnies"
Here is a video of Carole presenting her entry to those attending the 2022 Library event. At the end of the video, Rosemary Ritorto, the Town’s Local History Coordinator asks Carole about her experience of entering the Awards.
Sharon's Experience:
Sharon Mitchell also entered the Personal Memoirs category of the 2021 Local History Awards with a wonderful retelling of memories of her mother’s life. Her entry was called “Jessie’s Story: 91 Years in the Town of Victoria Park”
We hope you enjoy this video of Sharon presenting her entry to those attending the 2022 Library event.
Incidentally, the judges couldn’t decide between Carole and Sharon’s entries, so awarded a joint First Prize in the Personal Memoirs category.
Graham's Experience:
Graham Carpenter, a local musician and poet entered his poem “Boulevard of Broken Cars” into the 2021 Local History Awards. There was no specific category for poetry in that running of the Awards, so Graham also entered his poem into the Personal Memoirs category. As you watch and listen to the video of Graham performing his poem, you will enjoy the word pictures created and enjoy the ride down Albany Highway as the poem rolls back in time.
The Birth of a New Family Heirloom:
We do offer cash prizes for the Awards, and in 2021 Sharon, was able to create a new treasure and story in her family’s history, and it was all because she entered the Awards… check out this video as Sharon describes how she used her prize winnings.
What will be your Local History Awards Story?
