Time Warp Tuesday - 26 November 2024

Published on Tuesday, 26 November 2024 at 1:18:52 PM

It’s #TimeWarpTuesday and today we are looking at the Whadjuk Noongar names * for some of the native trees that appear throughout the Town but most especially in the superbly tendered Jirdarup Bushland Precinct. A very helpful table was included in the recent publication Jirdarup Bushland and the Friends who care for it and is shared here also.

Arguably the most well-known tree in Western Australia would be Eucalyptus marginata or the Jarrah tree, it’s Whadjuk Noongar name is ‘Djarraly’.

The bright yellow blooms of the Nuytsia floribunda also known as the Western Australian Christmas tree is named ‘Moojar’ in the Whadjuk Noongar language.

Jirdarup Bushland also contains fine examples of banksia, notably the Candle Banksia (Banksia attenuata) known in Whadjuk Noongar as ‘Piara’. The other notable banksia for which we know it’s Whadjuk Noongar name is the ‘Mungyt’ or Firewood Banksia (Banksia menziesii).

Have you been to Jirdarup Bushland and seen these trees for yourself? There are lovely walking tracks to be discovered, we invite you to go explore and soak up the natural beauty of the Western Australian bush right on our own back door.

To find out more visit the Friends of Jirdarup Bushland website: https://friendsofjirdarupbushland.org.au/  You can also borrow a copy of the book Jirdarup Bushland and the Friends who care for it from the Library. It is also available for sale at Crow Books and directly from the Friends group.

Note:

* These names are still used by Whadjuk Noongar people for these plants today.
