Leslie Edward PLUMMER was born in Korumburra, Victoria on the 24 November 1893. Leslie was the third of six children born to George Alfred and Catherine (nee WHITE) PLUMMER. The couple’s first four children were born in Victoria, with the first of the last two being born in Perth in 1901. Records indicate that the Plummer family had moved to Perth sometime in 1898-99. Leslie was five foot six and a half inches tall, had brown eyes and dark brown hair. He wasn’t married and lived in the family home at 21 Fitzroy (now Berwick) Street, Victoria Park. Leslie was a wire worker, in which occupation he crafted wire cages, grills and other items.
Upon his enlistment in the Australian Imperial Force on the 26 June 1915 Private Leslie Edward Plummer became a member of the famed 11th Battalion. Leslie embarked for training at Tel-El-Kabir, Egypt on the ship Themistocles on the 13 September 1915, he was 21 years old. After completing training and suffering several admissions to hospital for influenza, Leslie arrived on the Western Front on the 5 April 1916. He was Killed in Action at the Cordonneire salient in France on the 30 May 1916 when German artillery bombarded, then their infantry raided the 11th Battalion’s trenches. Leslie was aged just 22.
Interestingly, the Coolgardie Miner reported in its edition of 15 July 1916, page 1, that “Leslie Edward Plummer, who was recently killed in France, came from a long line of soldiers. He is a descendent of Colonel Hutchinson [through his paternal grandmother] who fought bravely at the battle of Colloden [sic], and a grandson of the late Lord Horgan, of County Cork [Ireland].” Leslie’s father George Alfred was a civil servant working at the Postmaster General’s Department for more than 20 years and by all accounts was well loved. His obituary in January 1923 stated that upon hearing the news of the death of his son Leslie on active service, he enlisted himself, at the age of 44.

George did return to Australia in 1918 and lived his remaining years with his wife in Berwick Street, and later 74 McMillan Street, Victoria Park. His death in 1923 at just 53 years of age was said to be from injuries received in the war.
The eldest Plummer sibling, George David and his wife Florence Jane Plummer named their first-born child in honour of their fallen brother, when Leslie Albert Cecil Plummer was born in Geraldton in 1918.
In 1919, on the third anniversary of his death, Leslie’s sister Daisy placed an “In Memoriam – Anzac Heroes” notice for her brother in The West Australian. The notice included the following poem that to this day paints a vivid picture of the grief of a nation over the loss of so many of its brave youth:
“In many Australian homes today
There’s a vacant chair, there’s a boy away;
There are falling tears and hearts that yearn
For the soldier boy who will never return.”
For more than ten years Leslie’s three sisters who were then in South Australia with their respective husbands, submitted notices to the Perth newspapers to remember their beloved brother. On the tenth anniversary of Leslie’s death in 1926, his sisters wrote: “PLUMMER – In loving memory of our dear brother Leslie Edward Plummer, killed in action May 30, 1916. As years go by we miss you more. Inserted by his loving sisters, Daisy, Betty and May.”
Plummer Street in East Victoria Park is named in honour of Leslie, and to this day, pays lasting tribute to the memory of a fallen son of Victoria Park.
